Coaches
William Sun
As a kid in Taiwan, William was inspired to play badminton just like his older brother, Ian. He began playing at 5 years old. He enrolled in a Taiwanese badminton academy in 5th grade and competed in the Taiwanese Junior League. In 8th grade, he was selected to join a team of players from all over Taiwan to compete in an invitational tournament in Nanjing, where he got 4th place in U17 Boy’s Doubles. However, a serious permanent back injury in 8th grade cut his career short before it could blossom.
Once he was able to move without severe pain in his back, his coaches decided to have him coach the younger kids in the academy and consistently assigned him assistant coaching roles whenever he was not training. This coaching experience would come in handy when he came to the USA. When he came to America, he was employed by Bellevue Badminton Club to coach their younger kids and also assist in developing their more advanced players. After his contract was up, he decided to come to Seattle Badminton Club to help develop their players to play at a higher level. He also occasionally plays tournaments in the USA.
Ever since he began teaching the juniors at his academy in Taiwan, William’s passion for coaching has only kept growing. He finds that seeing his students improve brings him enormous joy and motivates him to keep doing what he loves.
